The University of Delaware is the largest university in the state. The main campus is in Newark, with satellite campuses in Dover, Wilmington, Lewes and Georgetown. The original school from which this university grew was founded in 1743, making it one of the oldest in the nation; the original class of 10 students included George Read, Thomas McKean, and James Smith, all three of whom would later sign the Declaration of Independence.

A research-intensive, technologically advanced institution, the University of Delaware is ranked 68th “Best National University” by US News and World Report. The school ranked 22nd in the Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine list of 100 Best Values in Public Colleges. In 2010, the Times Higher Education listed the University of Delaware at number 159 in the world.

The university offers a broad range of degree programs, including four associate programs, 137 bachelor degree programs, 117 masters programs, 50 doctoral programs and 12 dual-graduate programs through seven colleges. It enrolls 17,000 undergraduates, 3,700 graduate students and 850 students in professional and continuing studies from around the world.

The University of Delaware faculty includes internationally known authors, scientists and artists, among them Nobel laureates, Guggenheim and Fulbright fellows, and members of the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Notable alumni include New Jersey governor Chris Christie and Vice President Joseph Biden.
