Harvey Mudd College is a private liberal arts college that was founded in 1955. It is named for Harvey Seeley Mudd, a mining engineer and the founder of the Cyprus Mines Corporation. The college is science-based and offers four-year degrees in chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering, biology, and computer science. Many Harvey Mudd College graduates go on to earn a Ph.D. In fact, the college produces one of the highest rates of Ph.D. students of any college or university in the country. It is considered one of the best liberal arts colleges in the US, and about a third of the students are National Merit Scholars.
