As one of California’s oldest universities, Chapman University was founded in 1861 as Hesperian College – a college that admitted students of both sexes and all races — a rarity at the time. In 1920, California Christian College absorbed Hesperian College. The name was changed in 1934 in honor of C.C. Chapman, the school’s primary benefactor.
