The University of Alabama, often simply referred as Alabama, is a public coeducational research university located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
This four-year primarily residential university, founded in 1831, emphasizes professional programs of study as well as the liberal arts. It is the flagship of the state’s university system, its oldest public university and the largest in terms of enrollment. The school offers programs of study in 13 academic divisions leading to undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees.
The University of Alabama offers the only publicly-supported law school in Alabama; the law school offers J.D. and LL.M. degree programs. The College of Community Health Services provides advanced studies in medicine, and operates a family practice residency program. Medical students are also trained in association with the University of Alabama School of Medicine, from which they receive their degree.
Milestones include the establishment of an M.F.A. Program in Book Arts at the university, one of only three schools in the country to offer such a degree.
The University of Alabama ranked among the top 50 public universities in the nation for the 10th consecutive year in the US News and World Report annual college rankings in 2010. The school ranked sixth in the nation among public universities in the enrollment of National Merit Scholars in the 2010 freshman class.
The University of Alabama’s intercollegiate athletic teams are known as the Crimson Tide. They compete in the Southeastern Conference of the NCAA’s Division I. Almost synonymous with Alabama football is legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant whose record at the University of Alabama was 232-46-9, tied with Notre Dame’s legendary coach Knute Rockne.
