Smith Level Road is a sparsely populated neighborhood in a wooded area. Homes are built along the wide road and are usually hidden by trees. Apartments and homes with all the modern amenities are in the neighborhood. Local schools include Culbreth Middle School, Frank P. Graham Elementary School, Carrboro High School, and Phoenix Academy. Mi Escuelita Spanish Immersion is a language daycare school where Spanish is taught to students.
By automobile, the neighborhood is close to the attractions of Carrboro. The wide streets and bicycle lanes in Carrboro make it a pedestrian and bicycle friendly community. Bicycle routes in town allow residents and visitors to commute or take leisurely rides to surrounding neighborhoods and cities. The Carrboro-SW-Raleigh bicycle trail is one of the trails which connect local commuters with Raleigh. The 44-kilometer trail passes through Carrboro, Carpenter, Cary, and Raleigh.
The Carr Mill Mall was once the Alberta Cotton Mill. Built in 1898, the mill was scheduled for destruction, but was saved by the community and reopened in 1977. The mall is an architectural treasure with its wood floors, high ceilings, and giant beams from its past. The Carr Mill Mall houses specialty shops, galleries, and restaurants.
The original Carrboro train station still exists, but has nightlife. The Station is a bar located in the old train station and is a meeting place for those who want to drink, dance, and listen to live music from local or visiting bands. The Southern Rail restaurant occupies old railroad cars and serves lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch.
East Branch Price Creek is an angler’s getaway and located only 1.5 miles from Carrboro. Anglers use their fly fishing skills to catch yellow perch, northern pike, and brown trout. University Lake is located southwest of Carrboro for more fishing. Campgrounds are nearby.
