Interstate 540 traverses the area within a half-mile to the north, and U.S. Highway 1 runs roughly north/south within a few miles east, connecting area residents to the downtown area. There are several attractions and amenities within a short drive of the Plateau Woods community. Immediately to the southeast is the North Ridge Country Club. Approximately two miles directly east of Plateau Woods is the Durant Nature Park. This mid-sized suburban park is a popular destination for families and nature lovers. There is a small lake here that offers a boathouse and ample trails for walking and jogging. The park and trails are dog friendly, and some of the trails also permit biking. Playgrounds and picnic areas are offered, as well. Many people come here just to enjoy nature and wildlife, including a variety of plant and bird species, as well as a butterfly garden.
Within five miles to the west of Plateau Woods is another large park – William B. Umstead State Park. Spanning more than 5,000 acres, this park is situated next to the Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
The Plateau Woods neighborhood is also convenient to several local shopping options. About two miles south of the community is the North Ridge Center and roughly equidistant to the northwest is Six Forks Station. Another retail area – the Stonehenge Market – is situated less than four miles directly west of the neighborhood. Between these three retail areas, residents have no shortage of shopping, dining, and entertainment options within a short drive of home.
