Residents of the Pine Hill neighborhood live in the serenity of the woods. Houses built along the road are almost hidden from the street. Although Pine Hill Drive does not have a bike trail, the asphalt street is wide enough to accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists. Since Carrboro is pedestrian friendly and has bike trails leading to surrounding cities, residents and visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk or commute into town and surrounding areas by bicycle. By automobile, motorists are minutes from the activities of Downtown Carrboro and Chapel Hill.
The neighborhood has two Orange County parks. The Charles Herman Wilson Park has a baseball field, open fields, and tennis courts. A playground, picnic table, and grills are available for family outings. Carrboro’s largest park, the Hank Anderson Community Park has all that is needed for a barbecue and picnic, fishing, and team sports. The Puppy Pasture is a fenced area and is the only leash-free dog park in town.
Laughter is guaranteed at the Dirty South Improv Theater. Known as the DSI Comedy Theater (DSI) since 2001, the 84-seat theatre with its non-smoking policy has been one of four Carrboro staples for live entertainment. Weekly live comedy performances include shows appropriate for children and families. The art of comedy is taught to up-and-coming comics of all ages. DSI sponsors the annual North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival in February. The three-week event is the largest premiere comedy festival in the nation, showcasing over 500 comedians.
Nightlife is next door at the Southern Rail and the Station Bar. The Southern Rail is a restaurant created from vintage railroad cars and decorated with antique train artifacts. The menu includes vegetarian fare. Station Bar patrons enjoy drinks, live music, and dancing. Big screens connect loyal Tarheel fans with televised university games.
