Old Five Points is a neighborhood in Northwest Durham, North Carolina. The location is close to downtown Durham, so schools, churches, stores, and restaurants are within walking distance. Residents love the Northgate Mall, just a mile from Duke University, which features Sears and Macy’s, multiple stores and restaurants and even a carousel for children and a Welcome Center for the city.
Sports enthusiasts love Durham, with its multiple opportunities to enjoy sporting events. Duke University has baseball, basketball, football, and lacrosse teams that are followed by local fans. North Carolina University has basketball and football teams also.
Historic Durham Athletic Park is the former home of the Durham Bulls baseball team from 1920 until 1994. It was the site of the movie, Bull Durham. It now hosts festivals, special events and amateur baseball.
Durham’s Downtown Entertainment District is located in the historic American Tobacco area of the city, which is a registered historic site with roots in the American Tobacco Factory, established in the 1800s. The Durham Performing Arts Center, Durham Bulls Baseball, art exhibits, restaurants and outdoor concerts called “Music On the Lawn” which are held from April to October, are all found in the District. The American Tobacco Campus is near a new 2,800 seat performing arts center. It has a YMCA, lovely green area, biking trails, and 5 restaurants. There is even a radio station which broadcasts from the campus.
Durham’s historical roots can be explored by visiting Bennett Place State Historic Site where Confederate General Johnson surrendered the final group of states of Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina to General Sherman; the final surrender of the Civil War.
