Residents of the Freman Tract community can enjoy more outdoor activities at the larger William B. Umstead State Park. Only 12 miles to the west of Freman Tract, the 5,000-acre park was once home to roaming elk, wolves, and the American bison. The state park now features 20 miles of trails plus three man-made lakes for fishing and boating. Big Lake, situated on Sycamore Creek, is the largest of these lakes.

The northern neighborhoods of Raleigh are about 15 miles from downtown. In 20 minutes, residents of Freman Tract can visit one of the five downtown districts. The Warehouse District spans about five city blocks and is a hub for entertainment and unique cuisine. It is also known as the Depot Historic District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
