Once the home of Winston-Salem’s wealthiest residents, West End continues to be a sought-after address with historic charm. The neighborhood was developed in 1890 around an electric street car line and soon drew residents from the famed Hanes and Reynolds families. In 1892, West End’s Hotel Zinzendorf hosted its first celebrity, United States Vice-Presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson.

The Zinzendorf burned down later that year, but West End grew as a lush oasis in the growing city. The neighborhood was designed by Jacob Lott Ludlow, a city engineer who was inspired by the rolling hills to build terraced lawns and curvy streets for the new resort community. The first houses, now historic treasures, were designed in the styles of Queen Anne, Neoclassical Revival, and Colonial Revival. Many of these homes feature stunning woodwork and stained glass.

Residential development continued in West End, with bungalows, Craftsmen-style houses, and apartments added in the 1920s. The neighborhood was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. More recent development has included modern condominium buildings such as West End Village. Homes in West End sell from $100,000 for a small condominium to $500,000 for a large, historic house.

West End encompasses ZIP code 27101, and the neighborhood is just north of the Interstate 40 business loop in downtown Winston-Salem.

The community is prized for its walkability to nearby parks and downtown restaurants, shops, and businesses. Hanes Park, which is in the west side of the neighborhood, has a 400-meter track, dirt trails, and tennis courts. The BB&T Ballpark, home of the Winston-Salem Dash minor league baseball team, is on the south side of West End.
