West Salem is a neighborhood located in the south east corner of the city of Winston-Salem in North Carolina. It is part of Forsyth County. Peter’s Creek Parkway forms the western border and West Academy Street its northern boundary. To the east is South Broad Street, and Washington Park marks the neighborhood’s southern border. West Salem was added to the National Register of Historic Places in January, 2005. Many of the neighborhood’s houses date back to the early 1900s. The area is a mix of residential and urban development.
There are many shopping options in the immediate vicinity of West Salem. Within the neighborhood is the West Salem Shopping Center. Just south of West Salem is the Market Place Shopping Center and Parkway Plaza.
Granville Park is located within West Salem and is the community gathering place. Along with a playground, the neighborhood park is often the site of local events such as the annual Easter egg hunt, Music in the Park concerts, and the Garden Club. The 75-acre Washington Park borders the neighborhood and offers ball fields, basketball courts, and hiking trails. BB&T Ballpark is located to the north and is home to the minor-league baseball team, the Winston-Salem Dash. The park opened in 2010 and seats up to 5,500 regular guests with room for up to 1,000 more in 16 special suites.
The University of North Carolina School of the Arts is located south of West Salem, and to the southwest is Forsyth Technical Community College which opened in 1960. The Winston-Salem State University is also located nearby.
