Shattalon Heights is a subdivision located northwest of Downtown Winston Salem in zip code 27106. Built in the 1960s, the homes sit on grassy landscaped lawns with mature trees which make for a pleasant stroll or bike ride in the neighborhood. The City of Winston Salem’s bicycle route map includes part of Shattalon Drive.
Main thoroughfares near Shattalon Heights are University Parkway and US 52/John M. Gold Freeway to the east and Reynolda Road on the west.
It’s just a short drive south to Oldtown and Historic Bethabara Park, the site of the first colonial town in the Carolina Piedmont. Included in this National Historic Landmark are a reconstructed palisade fort, 1788 church, and historic community and medicinal gardens. Nearby is Bethania, the second settlement.
Other nearby parks include Old Town Park to the south and CG Hill Memorial Park to the west.
West of Shattalon Heights is the Grandview public golf course in Pfafftown and south is the private Old Town Club with a golf course, clubhouse, tennis courts and swimming pools located south of the Wakeforest University campus.
Other universities are Winston-Salem State University and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Schools near Shattalon Heights include Old Town Elementary, Northwest Middle, and North Forsyth High.
Shopping, dining and entertainment are available in the downtown area as well as outlying shopping areas. The Giant Shopping Center and Old Town Shopping Center are located just south of Shattalon Heights.
The Stevens Center in downtown is the home of the Winston Salem Symphony, Piedmont Opera Theatre and the primary performance space for the North Carolina School of the Arts. And in the summer, downtown streets are closed Friday evenings for the Downtown Summer Music Series.
