Southwest of Downtown Winston Salem sits the Mountain Brook subdivision. Situated in zip code 27103, Mountain Brook is located just south of I-40, US 421 and west of US 52/Route 8/John Gold Memorial Expressway.
Neighborhood boundaries include Burke Mill Road on the north, a stream on the east, an imaginary north-south line running along the backyards of Weymouth road on the west. This line continues along the backyards on the south.
Homes in the Mountain Brook subdivision were built in the 1960s and are ranch style with grassy yards and mature trees. It’s a pleasant place to walk and ride a bike. Nearby parks include Miller Park, Washington Park and Bolton Park. Miller Park includes an amphitheatre where the Winston-Salem Community Band performs five concerts in the summer.
North of Mountain Brook are many shopping, dining and entertainment spots. The Hanes Mall Shopping Center, 3320 Silas Creek Parkway, is located north of I-40 and includes Sears, Belk, Dillard’s, Macy’s, JC Penney and Carmike Wynnsong 12 movie theater. Restaurants dot Hanes Mall Road south of I-40.
In addition to nearby entertainment venues, Downtown Winston Salem has much to offer. The Stevens Center in downtown is the home of the Winston Salem Symphony, Piedmont Opera Theatre and the primary performance space for the North Carolina School of the Arts. In the summer, downtown streets are closed Friday evenings for the Downtown Summer Music Series.
Other important sites near Mountain Brook are two hospitals north of I-40, Forsyth Medical Center and University Medical Center. Schools include are Bolton Elementary School, Philo Middle School and Career Center. Colleges and universities include Forsyth Technical Community College, North Carolina School of Fine Arts, Winston Salem State University and Wakeforest University.
