Adjacent to historic Old Salem in North Carolina, Happy Hill is a community that more than lives up to its pleasant moniker.
Happy Hill’s history can be traced back to the early days of Old Salem, which was settled by a group of Moravians from what is now part of the Czech Republic. The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, seeking to commemorate the rich heritage of the community, is currently displaying an exhibit entitled “Pride and Dignity from the Hill: A Celebration of the Historic Happy Hill Community.”
In addition to its proximity to Old Salem, the Happy Hill neighborhood is within a short driving distance from more than a few institutions of higher learning. The University of North Carolina is just over half a mile away, while Winston-Salem State University lies less than two miles from the community.
Additionally, the Happy Hill neighborhood is less than a mile from the prestigious Salem Academy. Established in 1772, the Academy, which is both a boarding and a day school, was founded in 1772 by settlers who believed that girls deserved a quality education. The Academy shares a 64-acre campus with Salem College.
Nature lovers residing in Happy Hill enjoy easy access to Happy Hill Park, a large recreational area that is also home to the William C. Sims Community Center.
These outstanding educational opportunities, a culturally rich heritage and access to some of the oldest historic venues in the nation make Happy Hill a pleasant place for residents to call home.
