About 30 minutes west of Greensboro, North Carolina, is the suburb of Winston-Salem. In the southwest portion of Winston-Salem, roughly 45 minutes from downtown Greensboro, is the Hanestown neighborhood. Hanestown is in the 27103 zip code area, within Forsyth County.
The Hanestown community is part of the Southwest Ward, originally built around the Hosiery Mill. Today, the mill has been converted to a Sara Lee factory, and many of the old residences in the community are now small businesses. This mixed zoning here has created a unique salon district, where entire blocks of housing have been converted to hair and nail salons.
There are many amenities within a five-mile radius of Hanestown. Area golf courses include Wilshire Golf Club and Heather Hills Golf Course. The latter, situated on Heathrow Drive, is a public, 18-hole, executive-length course with affordable green fees.
For more outdoor recreation, Hanestown residents head to Hobby Park, situated on West Clemmonsville Road. This city park is a green oasis in the middle of the city. It consists mostly of undeveloped wooded areas and open green space, but it does offer some amenities, including hiking and mountain biking trails. It is also the home of a local club that flies remote control aircraft.
Another option in the area is Tanglewood Park, which features another golf course and the All-American Rose Selections Garden. Other amenities here include a bed and breakfast, horseback riding, fishing, and paddle boating. A third area golf course — Oak Valley Golf Course — is adjacent to Tanglewood on the west.
For local shopping, Hanestown residents head to the Hanes Mall Shopping Center, north of I-40. The Forsyth Medical Center is adjacent to the mall and provides convenient health care options for area residents.
