Clayton Acres is a residential neighborhood of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, located north of the city. It is close to Wake Forest University and its 129-acre Reynolds Gardens. The gardens were part of a 1,067-acre estate belonging to R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company founder Richard Joshua Reynolds and his wife, Katharine Smith Reynolds.
The 6,921-acre Hanging Rock State Park is also nearby. This natural wonder has a 12-acre lake, a stone bathhouse, and a diving tower. Other facilities include a picnic area and a shelter. The historic bathhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. Thousands of visitors flock to the park every year. In 1993, a visitor’s center was added, with an auditorium, exhibit room, and classroom.
Bedews Lake is a reservoir in Winston-Salem that beckons anglers and swimmers. Picnicking, camping, and hiking are also popular pastimes in the area.
Shopping enthusiasts in Clayton Acres are close to the 1,558,860-square-foot Hanes Mall, which was the largest mall in North Carolina until 2004. The complex, named after the Hanes family textile dynasty, has something for everybody. The anchor stores are Macy’s, J.C. Penny, Sears, and Dillard’s. Shoppers can take a break at the food court, a children’s play area, and a carousel.
The neighborhood is close to fine dining in the Triad region, which comprises the cities of Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and High Point. Ryan’s Restaurant offers steak, chops, and seafood. It is often featured in national publications and was awarded the Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence. Foothills Brewing has hand-crafted beers and a menu that incorporates beer in some of its recipes. The Old Salem Tavern offers salads, poultry, beef, and seafood, and servers are dressed in period costumes reflecting Winston-Salem’s 18th-century Moravian influence.
