Ardmore is a neighborhood located in Winston-Salem. The community’s borders are Knollwood Street on the west and South Hawthorne Road on the south. South Hawthorne intersects with Miller Road to form the eastern border of the area, and the Interstate 40 business loop forms the northern boundary. During the 1920s, prior to becoming a residential community, the neighborhood, which sits atop a hill, was a popular golf course. Today, this North Carolina community consists of a mix of bungalow-style homes and other residences.
Nature lovers will be pleased to know that several outdoor parks are located with a few miles of the Ardmore neighborhood. Miller Park is situated within the community and offers shaded green space and playgrounds for children of all ages. A few miles outside the area is Horizons Park, more than 450 acres of rolling wooded hills that offer walking trails, a picnic pavilion, and open green space for playing games or just enjoying the natural beauty of the area. Man’s best friend is also welcome here, as the park offers an off-leash enclosed play area for both small and large dogs.
One of the major attractions located near these homes is Historic Bethabara Park, a 175-acre national historic site that showcases the history of the Moravians, a German-speaking Protestant group who moved from Pennsylvania to North Carolina in the mid-16th century and founded the village around 1753. The site includes a reconstructed church, where a number of significant archaeological items have been discovered, as well as gardens maintained in the original Colonial style and a visitor’s center. Guided tours are provided by individuals dressed in recreated Moravian dress.
