Gibsonville was named for Joseph Gibson. Joseph Gibson was a settler from Edinborough, Scotland who moved to Charleston in 1765 with his parents at the age of 15. He moved to the area that became Gibsonville around 1775 and opened a general store. He died in 1823 and the town was named for him when it incorporated in 1871.
