Sneads Ferry is a charming fishing village located on the coast of North Carolina about 30 miles south of Jacksonville. It is across Traps Bay from Camp Lejeune Marine Base. Sneads Ferry catches 385 tons of shrimp annually, in addition to 25 tons of flounder and about 490 tons of other seafood, including oysters, scallops, crabs, and clams.
The village has a long history, dating back to 1728 when a ferry was established in the area. The ferry helped travelers get between Suffolk, Virginia and Charleston, South Carolina. By 1759, two ferries were operating, one from each side of the New River. On the north shore, the proprietor of the ferry was Robert Snead – so the crossing site became known as “Snead’s Ferry.”
The Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival is an annual tradition spanning more than 40 years. It is a hugely popular event, attracting over 10,000 people to the small community. It has grown so much that in 2011, the festival was officially named the Official Shrimp Festival of North Carolina by the North Carolina General Assembly. The festivities include the Miss Shrimp Pageant to crown a Shrimp Queen and a Shrimp Ball, the largest community dinner dance event of the year. The two-day festival also includes music, a shrimp heading contest, a parade, a beer and wine tent, fireworks, a car show, military exhibits, arts and crafts, and tons of shrimp and other food.
When you rent a Sneads Ferry apartment, you’ll enjoy this quaint seaside village and all of its charms. You’ll enjoy amazing seafood at a vast selection of restaurants, including Riverview Café, Pirates Cove, and Green Turtle – all located on the river. You can purchase fresh seafood right off the boats at several locations, and great events, such as the King Mackerel Tournament, Winter Fest, and the Blessing of the Fleet. Catch a show at the community theater or go golfing at the North Shore Country Club.
