Durham, NC Apartments for Rent

Welcome to the “Bull City!” First known as a hub of the tobacco industry and later as the location of Duke University, Durham is a fascinating city with a long history. Renting an apartment in Durham will provide you with a historic downtown filled with converted warehouses, a college-town vibe, and terrific things to do.

Durham, North Carolina is actually named in honor of Bartlett S. Durham. He donated the land for a railway station, which became known as Durham Station. The Bull Durham Tobacco Factory, which was established here in the late 1800s, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark. It is part of the American Tobacco Company Manufacturing Plant historic district. This district includes 14 buildings and three structures built by the American Tobacco Company, founded by J.B. Duke in 1890. Today, these buildings contain shops, businesses, the Durham Performing Arts Center, and the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Duke University was established in 1838. The school was moved to Durham in 1892, but it wasn’t until 1924 that James Buchanan Duke, a tobacco and electric power industrialist, set up an endowment for the then-Trinity College. He renamed the school Duke University in honor of his father. Duke University is a highly-selective, private, research university.  Durham is also home to North Carolina Central University. Education is big in Durham, and the public school system is top-rated. It is not only a great location for college students, but for single professionals and families, as well.

Art and music play a large part in Durham culture. The American Dance Festival and the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival are just a couple of the popular events held in Durham. Take in a show at the Durham Performing Arts Center or the Carolina Theatre, or enjoy live performances in the downtown clubs.

Research Triangle Park is one of the largest research parks in the world. Ericsson, Lenovo, IBM, and Cisco Systems are just a few of the companies located there. Other top employers are Duke University, GlaxoSmithKline, Fidelity Investments, and IBM. Durham was ranked among the top 10 “Best Places for Business and Careers” in 2013 by Forbes Magazine.

Sports enthusiasts will enjoy the Durham Bulls AAA Baseball team. In nearby Raleigh, check out the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes. And, of course, nothing tops cheering on Duke University’s Blue Devils, who compete in NCAA Division I as part of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The football team plays at Wallace Wade Stadium, the basketball team at Cameron Indoor Stadium, and the baseball team at Jack Coombs Field.

Eno River State Park will quickly become your favorite destination once you move to an apartment in Durham. This park offers camping, hiking, picnic areas, canoeing, and fishing. The park covers 3,900 acres along the river.

There’s so much to see and do after you move to your Durham apartment, it may be difficult to decide where to start. Tour the Nasher Museum of Art; play golf at the Hillandale Golf Course; attend any number of festivals; cheer at a sports event; visit museums, theaters, and cafes; and enjoy the nightlife – the possibilities are endless when you call Durham home.
