South Oleander is a neighborhood located southeast of Downtown Wilmington, in zip code 28403. Nearby major thoroughfares include Oleander Drive/US-76 along the north border of the neighborhood, Independence Boulevard along the eastern border, US 117/Shipyard Boulevard to the south, and US-421 to the west.

Many of the homes in this neighborhood were built in the 1950s and their large lots feature lush green lawns, landscaping and mature trees. Since there are sidewalks, this is an ideal area to walk and ride bikes.

For beach lovers, one of the nice things about Wilmington is every residence is ten miles or less from the beach no matter where you live. In the case of South Oleander, it’s about a 15 minute drive to Wrightsville Beach, which is due east.

There are also a number of parks and golf courses close by. On the way to Wrightsville Beach is Airlie Gardens on Airlie Road. Open to the public, these gardens feature the 462-year-old Airlie Oak and more than 100,000 azaleas and countless camellia cultivars. Northeast of South Oleander is Empire Park, 3405 Park Avenue, includes a dog park, playgrounds, tennis courts, and bike racks. The public Wilmington Municipal Golf Course, 311 S Wallace Avenue, is just a few minutes’ drive east.

Shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities include the Independence Mall, just east of South Oleander. Merchants include Bath and Body Works, Aeropostale, The Finish Line, JC Penney, Ruby Tuesday and Starbucks Coffee. Wilmington’s downtown Historic River Area includes several blocks of restaurants, shopping, and services including Riverboat Landing, 2 Market Street, and the Riverwalk along the Cape Fear River.

Nearby schools are Alderman Elementary, Roland-Grise Middle, and Hoggard High.

Other notable sites include New Hanover County International Airport to the north and New Hanover Regional Medical Center to the west.
