The Old Earnhardt neighborhood, like most of Kannapolis, is rich in NASCAR history. NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt, Sr., was born in Kannapolis and grew up in the Car Town neighborhood. In an older section of Earnhardt Road, there was once a slaughterhouse ran by the Earnhardt family. In 1992, Kannapolis renamed Earnhardt Road after Dale Earnhardt. The Dale Earnhardt Boulevard is a major Kannapolis thoroughfare and the beginning of the Dale Trail. The Dale Trail is a popular tourist destination for NASCAR fans, where visitors can tour the familiar landmarks known to the famous Earnhardt family, which has produced three generations of racers.
Besides following the Dale Trail by automobile, residents and tourists can make a family-friendly getaway to two well-known North Carolina state parks. Lake Norman State Park is a year-round recreation area for fishing, boating, water sports, and camping. It has trails for hiking and biking. Another state park within driving distance of Kannapolis is Morrow Mountain State Park. The 4,742-acre park has trails for hiking, backpacking and biking. The park includes Lake Tillery, the historic Kron House and a museum.
