The Sunset Park neighborhood of Wilmington, North Carolina, is an historical area and many of the homes are being maintained to continue the history and are included in a listing for Historic Wilmington Plaque Houses.

One-story ranches and one-and-a-half story Colonials can be found in Sunset Park. Two-story Colonial Revivals are also scattered through the area. While homes have street number addresses they are also listed by owner’s name and date, the Burnett House – 1941, is one example. Original homes are surrounded by beautiful mature trees and sidewalks are provided for pedestrians.

Sunset Park was originally designed to be a prestigious planned community by Fidelity Development and Investment Company in 1912. The neighborhood provided views of Greenfield Lake and the Cape Fear River. The first properties were sold in October of 1912. The Victory Home Company was organized in 1918 to build housing for shipbuilders. Homes were rented to these workers until at least 1927. The entrance gates themselves are all that remain of the original elaborate entrance into the community.

The Deeds Map Book shows various portions of Sunset Park as it was developed. Originally named Carolina Beach Boulevard; Carolina Beach Road is the eastern boundary. Northern Boulevard forms the northern boundary and Southern Boulevard, the southern boundary. The western border is created by Port Wilmington and the Cape Fear River. Jefferson Street, inside the community, was listed as Jeffeson Street in the Platt books.

Legion Stadium is just east of Sunset Park and the metro center of Wilmington is north on Route 421. Points of interest include the Cape Fear Museum on Market Street and the Wilmington Railroad Museum on Nutt Street. The Cape Fear River also marks the boundary between New Hanover and Brunswick Counties. Sunset Park is in New Hanover County and has a zip code of 28401.
