Hempstead was settled by colonists in 1644 and has more than 20 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including St. George’s Church, which was built in 1822. The church was founded in 1702 and was rebuilt twice, once in 1734 and again in 1822. The post office, built in 1932, is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The lobby contains several murals that were painted in 1936, and the building is a beautiful example of Art Deco architecture.
Hempstead Lake State Park is an ideal location for weekend getaways. The park includes 20 tennis courts, basketball courts, horseback riding trails, hiking and biking trails, a historic carousel, picnic areas, and three fishing ponds. Hempstead Lake is the largest lake in Nassau County and is a popular fishing and boating destination. The other lakes, McDonald Pond and South Pond, are stocked with trout. Other fish include perch, carp, sunfish, large-mouth bass, and black crappie.
