Elmira Apartments for Rent
Elmira’s fascinating history began shortly after a Revolutionary War battle in 1779, when the Sullivan Expedition, ordered by George Washington and led by Major General John Sullivan, was sent to the area to end the alliance between British loyalists and the four Iroquois nations that sided with them.
In 1788, the Township of Chemung was established along the Chemung River. The name was changed to the Town of Elmira in 1808 after a town meeting at the local tavern. The city of Elmira was incorporated in 1864. Canals built along the Chemung River and the railroad system helped Elmira, which is located between Rochester and New York City, grow into a transportation hub.
Today, Elmira is a charming city wrapped around a historic downtown. Your new Elmira apartment will give you access to two colleges: Elmira College, established in 1855, and Elmira Business Institute, established in 1858. Wisner Market is held downtown during the summer months and features fresh produce from local farmers, arts and crafts, and entertainment. The downtown offers shops, restaurants, and several events and festivals, such as the annual Elmira Street Painting Festival. This festival includes art vendors, music, food, activities for kids, and local artists using chalk to create works of art on the sidewalks.
