A settlement grew along the banks of the old Erie Canal where it empties into the Niagara River eventually becoming the town of Tonawanda, New York. Raintree Island is a popular Tonawanda residential community that is just 15 minutes from downtown Buffalo and the University of Buffalo North Campus.

The park is open during the winter months for sledding and cross-country skiing.

Tonawanda is the place where tourists travel across the Niagara River to Canada on I-190 and the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. The best Sunday afternoon drive in the area however is the scenic drive from the Peace Bridge in Buffalo, along the Niagara River from Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Niagara Parkway provides an unimpeded panoramic view of the river as you drive. Once there you can see the Niagara Falls. The Canadian side offers an incredible view of the falls and has several parking and viewing areas as well as other family attractions.
