Amsterdam Apartments for Rent
Divided by the Mohawk River about 40 minutes northwest of Albany and about 20 minutes northwest of Schenectady, the small city of Amsterdam may appear rural, but it is close enough to major cities to make this beautiful city a desirable location. Rent an Amsterdam apartment and enjoy this beautiful New York gem.
Amsterdam is bordered on the south end by Interstate 90, while the town of Amsterdam wraps around the north, east, and west. It is a city rich with history that dates back to 1710, when Dutch immigrants settled the area. In 1773, Guy Johnson arrived to what was then called Veeders Mills. He built a stone Georgian mansion, but was forced to flee to Canada when the American Revolution began and he sided with the British, angering local patriots.
The mansion, named Guy Park, is the current location of the Walter Elwood Museum. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this site was severely damaged by Hurricane Irene in 2011. Other historic sites in the area include the Guy Park Avenue School, Green Hill Cemetery, Greene Mansion, and the Samuel Sweet Canal Store.
Amsterdam Castle, built in 1895 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, served as a National Guard Armory until 1995. It was purchased and converted into a home, and today it is a uniquely beautiful bed and breakfast. The building is a vast 36,000 square feet and houses 50 rooms, including a billiard room, a gym, a fallout shelter, and a rifle range.
