Hamilton Hills is a neighborhood in Schenectady, New York. The neighborhood is south of the downtown section. The area is bordered on the west by Interstate 890 and on the east by State Street. South Brandywine Avenue, or Route 146, is the southern border, and Broadway and Veeder Avenue are the boundaries to the north.
The Mont Pleasant neighborhood is located on the other side of Interstate 890 and shares a similar history. The area was settled by many workers in the nearby General Electric plant. When the plant closed, the residents moved to the suburbs, and the area is now listed as a Federal Reserve Community.
The area is the site of the one of the oldest churches in the city, which was founded in 1870. Students in the Hamilton Hills neighborhood attend William C. Keane Elementary School and then go on the Mont Pleasant Middle School, which serves grades six through eight. High school students enroll at Schenectady High School. Residents in the community are served by an outlet of Schenectady’s County Public Library system, with a second-floor branch located in the Carver Community Center.
Jerry Burrell Park is located in the northern section of Hamilton Hills, and Schenectady Park is in the south. St. John’s Cemetery is on the eastern edge of the neighborhood. Hamilton Hills Art Center is located on Schenectady Street and is a cultural art center for the Capital Region.
