Albany County, New York

Albany County, located in New York along the banks of the Hudson River, was named after the Duke of York and Albany, who became James II of England. The current population of the county is just over 300,000 residents. The county seat is the city of Albany, New York’s state capital and the oldest capital city in the country.

Bordered on the north and east by the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers, Albany County is the heartbeat of New York State’s government and school system. It’s also, residents boast, an all-around great place to live, work and play.

Interesting sites in Albany County include the Shaker Heritage Society, a non-profit organization that offers award-winning educational programs about the Shakers, their innovative spirit and their influence on American culture. The Society works to preserve the integrity of the Watervliet Shaker National Historic District, the site of America’s first Shaker settlement.

The Society’s offices are located on the 770-acre Church Family Site, the heart of the Historic District. There are nine remaining Shaker buildings, an herb garden, open fields, an apple orchard, the Ann Lee Pond nature preserve and the Shaker cemetery, where founder Ann Lee is buried. Visitors are welcome.

Another –quite different – location of interest in Albany County is Thompson’s Lake State Park, located in East Berne. The park’s beautiful sandy beach offers the perfect place for a swim or a campout under the stars.

The outdoor Farmer’s Market in the town of Bethlehem, New York was likely one of the reasons this Albany County city was ranked as one of the top-25 Great American Towns by MONEY magazine.

C. H. Evans Brewing Company at the Albany Pump Station offers hand-crafted beer in an amazing historic space. With up to 10 in-house brews from which to choose, The Pump Station offers a warm and friendly atmosphere in an actual pump station structure, circa 1895, with 8,000 square feet and roof trusses 40 feet above the floor.

The median age in Albany County is 37 years, and the median income for a household here is $42,935. Notable residents have included Andy Rooney, American radio and television writer and commentator best known for work on 60 Minutes.
