About an hour northeast of Trenton and an hour south of Newark, Tinton Falls is about five miles from the Jersey Shore. Originally settled in the 1600s as New Shrewsbury, the settlement began to grow after James Grover built an ironworks along the river – one of the oldest in the country. The Old Mill, built around 1665, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The borough of Tinton Falls maintains several parks. Overlook by the Falls includes a wooden platform overlooking the waterfall and wildlife area. Riverdale West Park includes a tot lot, ball fields, and a basketball court. Liberty II contains ball fields, a dog park, a walking path, a concession stand, basketball courts, and a recreation complex. Twin Brook Golf Center is a public, nine-hole golf course.
