Somerville is located north of Trenton along the Raritan River. Dutch colonists built a church near present-day Somerville, sometime in the 1750s. Shortly after the American Revolution, a village began to develop around the church, a nearby tavern, and a courthouse. This tiny farming community became a town in 1863, but no one knows where the name came from – some claim the village was named after some of the original settlers, a family named Somerville, who settled here in the 1750s.
Somerville is a terrific apartment-renting location – it is perfectly located to New York City, Staten Island, the Jersey Shore, and Trenton. It is just a short drive northeast of Philadelphia, and it is one of New Jersey’s most beloved townships. Somerville is a brilliant collection of tree-lined streets, Victorian architecture, and a fun-filled downtown.
Somerville is home to several historic sites, including the Somerville Courthouse, which was built in 1909. The Wallace House was built in 1778 and was used as George Washington’s headquarters during the winter of 1778-79. During that time, Washington used the house to host dinners – featuring guests Alexander Hamilton, Henry Knox, Nathanael Greene, and Benedict Arnold. Another historic site is the Old Dutch Parsonage, built in 1751 for the first ministers of the Dutch Reformed Churches. One of the reverends who spent time in the house – Reverend John Frelinghuysen – established Rutgers University in 1766 and served as its first president.
