Perth Amboy, NJ Apartments for Rent

Historic Perth Amboy was settled in 1683 by Scottish colonists. The settlement was named for James Drummond, Earl of Perth. Before the settlers arrived, the area was called “Ompoge” by the Lenape. The Scottish settlers tacked the original name onto the new name of Perth, which was distorted into “Ambo” and eventually “Amboy.” Perth Amboy became one of New Jersey’s first townships in 1798.

Perth Amboy’s history is reflected in its stunning architecture, which include the Proprietary House. The Proprietary House was built in 1762, and it is the only Proprietary Governor’s Mansion of the original Thirteen Colonies left standing. It was occupied from 1774 to 1776 by William Franklin, the son of Benjamin Franklin. William Franklin was arrested in 1776 and was eventually imprisoned in Connecticut. Today, the house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a house museum.

Located on Raritan Bay, Perth Amboy features a beautiful waterfront, complete with a ferry to Tottenville. Less than 30 miles to New York City, Perth Amboy is ideally located for commuting into the city for Broadway shows and other theater performances, museums, restaurants, shopping, and New York’s famous nightlife. The North Jersey Coast Line offers a train into New York’s Penn Station and to Long Branch.

Once you’ve chosen your Perth Amboy apartment to rent, you’ll enjoy a vibrant, beautiful community with a fascinating history and a delightful downtown. As you stroll through this pedestrian-friendly community, be sure to stop and check out the historic sites, such as Kearny Cottage, a historic home built in 1781. It features a colonial garden and operates as a museum. Perth Amboy City Hall was built in 1714 and is the oldest city hall in the US.
