When you choose a Mount Laurel apartment to rent, you’ll be living in an area rich with history. The Lenni-Lenape Indians, who inhabited the Delaware Valley from around the 1400s to the 1700s, had villages that dotted the banks of the Rancocas River. They befriended the Dutch settlers who arrived in the early 17th century. One of the first known settlers, William Evans, settled here in 1682 with his wife and three children. His son eventually purchased land in the area and donated an acre to the Society of Friends to build the Friends Meeting House in 1760. Today, the Meeting House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Other historic sites in Mount Laurel include Jacob’s Chapel. The chapel was built in 1859 and was part of the Underground Railroad. Built in 1866 as a farmer’s club, Farmer’s Hall later served as the town hall from 1904 to 1969. The building is currently a museum and home to the Mount Laurel Historical Society. The Clinton House, built around 1744, is believed to have been a local tavern. General Sir Henry Clinton utilized the building as his headquarters in 1778. Other historic sites include the Friends Schoolmaster’s House, built around 1783; The Lippincott House, built in the 1840s as a general store; and Paulsdale. Built in 1840, this is the birthplace of Alice Paul, a prominent leader in the Women’s suffrage movement. It is currently a historic house museum and home to the Alice Paul Institute.
