Although settlers arrived to the area in the early 1700s, Monroe Township wasn’t formed until 1859. It is located in northeast Gloucester County and was mainly a farming community until the mid-1900s, when it became popular as a suburban community. Monroe is located northeast of Trenton. Monroe is home to several residential communities, apartment buildings, and retirement communities. Public transportation is available through the New Jersey Transit System, which provides bus service to Midtown Manhattan on routes 138 and 139.
