Monmouth County, New Jersey

Vast, green lawns and palatial homes, manicured parks, and miles of beautiful shoreline make this part of the Garden State one of the most beautiful. Monmouth County is located along the coast of New Jersey and is part of the New York City metro area. This is a wealthy area, ranking among the nation’s highest-income counties. The county was formed in 1675. The county seat is Freehold Borough and the largest community is Middletown Township.

The Gateway National Recreation Area at Sandy Hook contains miles of beaches along the ocean and bay. Containing 26,000 acres, this park is popular for swimming, fishing, hiking, biking, and camping. The Sandy Hook Lighthouse was first lit in 1764. At the time, it was just 500 feet from the tip of Sandy Hook. Due to ocean currents moving sand along the coast, the lighthouse is now about a mile and a half from the tip. It is a National Historic Landmark and is maintained by the US Coast Guard. Other historic sites in Monmouth County include Monmouth Battlefield State Park, Historic Walnford, Twin Lights, Sea Girt Lighthouse, the Stephen Crane House, and Woodrow Wilson Hall.

Allaire State Park contains a 19th-century iron-making town called Allaire Village. The park contains over 200 species of plants, and the Manasquan River flows through the park. The 1,569-acre Cheesequake State Park is popular for fishing, boating, swimming, camping, hiking, and biking. Winter activities include snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, and sledding.
