When Lewis and Clark traveled across the preset-day state of Montana, they struggled with rugged conditions, both on land and on water. One troublesome spot in particular was a series of five waterfalls on the Missouri River that slowed them down for more than a month. This rough section of their journey is marked by the Great Falls Portage National Historic Landmark in present-day Great Falls.

Great Falls is a charming city located in central Montana. It is the county seat of Cascade County and the location of Malmstrom Air Force Base, the University of Great Falls, and Montana State University Great Falls – COT. The city enjoys a stable economy, a low cost of living, and a wide variety of housing options. But most residents are drawn to Great Falls by what’s outside. Apartments in Great Falls have some of the best amenities around – such as the amazing river, the stunning waterfalls, and 57 gorgeous parks.

The River’s Edge Trail is a 40-mile biking, walking, and jogging path that follows the Missouri River. City parks include two public golf courses, a skate park, and a dog park. Gibson Park is the heart of Great Falls, with concerts, events, and festivals taking place here. It features a pond, beautiful gardens, a band shell, a playground, and picnic areas. Great Falls is also about an hour from Yellowstone National Park and Glacier Park. Lewis and Clark National Forest is also nearby and Great Falls is home to the park’s interpretive center. These locations are ideal for fishing, hunting, OHV riding, horseback riding, hiking, and camping.
