Compton Heights Neighborhood in Saint Louis, MO

Compton Heights Neighborhood

St. Louis, Missouri, the second largest city in the state, has a population of more than 350 thousand people. The city lies on the state’s east side, along the Mississippi River. Famous for its Gateway Arch, professional baseball team, historic districts, and picturesque neighborhoods, St. Louis is both diverse and growing.

In the 63104 zip code, the neighborhood of Compton Heights sits on the city’s south side. One of St. Louis’ older subdivisions, the neighborhood was established in 1884, and is part of the historic Compton Hill area. Its boundaries include Grand Boulevard, Park Avenue, Jefferson Avenue, and Arsenal Street. The curving streets of Hawthorne and Longfellow Boulevards offer residents a place for scenic strolls.

Amid the sprawling homes of Compton Heights are buildings like the historic Adlon Condominiums on Russell Boulevard. The building is located across from the Compton Hill Reservoir. The Reservoir Park’s water tower is a neighborhood landmark, designed by George Mann and completed in 1896. It was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1972. Reservoir Park has both walking paths and a dog park.

Fox Park features a playground, a lighted softball field, a basketball court, and horseshoe pits. Also in the neighborhood is the Robert Terry Park on Compton and Eads Avenues. This larger park was named for Dr. Robert James Terry, one of the founders of the St. Louis Audubon Society.

Compton Heights has its own neighborhood band, founded in 1975, who frequently play in the Tower Grove Park Music Pavilion, just two miles southwest of Compton Heights. Next to Tower Grove Park sits the Shaw Botanical Garden, which features a 14-acre Japanese garden and a tropical domed greenhouse. Its geodesic dome is 70-feet high.

Compton Heights is minutes from the St. Louis Business District, St. Louis University Hospital, and shopping at Union Station.
