Old North St Louis Neighborhood in Saint Louis, MO

Old North St Louis Neighborhood

Head for Old North Saint Louis, located just north of downtown Saint Louis, and enjoy a multi-cultural neighborhood with a purpose. The Old North Restoration Group, a non-profit community-based organization, has a goal to restore and develop the Old North Saint Louis area, maintaining the area’s character, historical and cultural.

One of the most unique facts about this area is the number of community gardens found there. The area is home to eleven community gardens, all maintained by volunteer labor from the neighborhood residents and volunteer groups from outside the immediate area. Neighborhood unity is also felt during Brightside Blitz, an annual event that has volunteers cleaning up the gardens, alleys, vacant lots and streets every spring. It is obvious that Old North Saint Louis residents care about their community.

The new Crown Square is the pride and joy of this neighborhood. The community rehabilitation group has worked magic on 27 historic buildings, turning them into lofts, apartments, and a new shopping area. They have added new lights for the streets and enhanced the area’s walkability with public green spaces and landscaping.

The neighborhood of Old North St. Louis is developing an artisan feel. With the opening of the Crown Village Gallery, they are hoping to attract more artists, poets, musicians and graphic designers to the area. It is an excellent location for new and emerging artists.

Bryan Mullanphy, son of America’s “first millionaire,” was born in Saint Louis. He lived a very colorful life, including a stint as mayor in St. Louis. Upon his death, he left the city money to help emigrants and travelers on their way west. The city established the Mullanphy Emigrant Home, located near the edge of Old North St. Louis. Today, the restored building connects downtown to Old North Saint Louis.
