Saint Joseph, MO Apartments for Rent

St. Joseph oozes Midwestern charm. Quiet streets lined with quaint shops and restaurants create a picture-perfect downtown, but the echoes of horse hooves charging down a dirt road, ridden by rebels firing shots in the air, still resonate. This was the heart of the Wild West, the place where the Pony Express began, and the place where Jesse James drew his last breath.

The home where Jesse James was shot by his friend Robert Ford and the former hotel that served as the Pony Express headquarters and where James’ family stayed during the investigation into his murder are located in the same complex. The Patee House Museum features two floors of exhibits, including an 1877 railroad depot, a stagecoach, real gallows, and horse-drawn hearses.

Although the hitching posts and dirt roads are gone from downtown, the ambiance remains in the historic architecture. Shops range from antique stores to boutiques to modern, sleek shopping malls. The farmer’s market is located downtown, as well as many restaurants, cafes, and pubs.

In addition to the Patee House Museum, St. Joseph celebrates its history with several other museums. For those who enjoy the unusual – if not slightly macabre — the Glore Psychiatric Museum contains exhibits highlighting the 130-year history of State Lunatic Asylum No. 2, a state facility that opened in 1874. The Pony Express Museum features several exhibits, including a blacksmith and wheel wright shop, a harness and tack room, and an 1860s coin collection. Other museums include the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, the National Military Heritage Museum, the St. Joseph Museum, and the Robidoux Row Museum – a series of connected houses built in the 1840s by Joseph Robidoux, the city’s founder.

Rent an apartment in St. Joseph and enjoy this dynamic Midwestern city. From its historic sites to its theaters, nightlife, and family fun, this city has something for everyone.
