Located in central Kansas City, the historic neighborhood of Roanoke is not only one of the most beautiful in the city for its landscaping, but also has some of the city’s finest architecture. Created in 1887, it was one of the first planned suburbs, but today lies inside the southeast corner of Roanoke Park at Thirty-ninth Street, considered the city’s midtown district.

As expected, due to its parkland location, homes were built throughout the years to take advantage of the winding roads throughout the landscape, and many are well integrated with their richly wooded sites. The Roanoke Protective Homes Association was created in 1921 to govern the area and later took on a preservation role. In 1985, the neighborhood was declared a Historic District.

Many of the Roanoke homes have important historic value. Landmarks include the home and studio of painter Thomas Hart Benton, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is available to tour.

Other area landmarks include the 1940s Sondern-Adler House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright; the William B. Nickel and Edward W. Clark houses, both Prairie School homes; and the Albert J. Yanda House, which is a stunning example of mid-century modern architecture. These homes, and many more of equally important architectural value, grace the community of Roanoke.

Given the beautiful natural landscaping, it is little surprise that gardening has an important role in the community. The Roanoke Garden Club maintains the beautiful neighborhood entrance, plants traffic circles, and generally expands its outreach to improve the beauty of the neighborhood, most recently planting flowering crab trees in Roanoke Park and enhancing Summit Strip.

The Garden Club sponsors neighborhood events such as the Azaela Festival as well. Other neighborhood events include the recently added Roanoke Neighborhood Dinner, sponsored by local restaurants.
