The south side of this city is devoted mostly to natural areas and conservation. Among the outdoor attractions near Lake Woodrail are the Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area, Plowboy Bend Conservation Area, and Rock Bridge Memorial State Park. Named after its distinctive rock bridge, the latter spans more than 2,270 acres and was acquired in 1967. Visitors come to this state park on South Highway 163 to explore the natural areas, which include forests, restored grasslands, streams, and Connor’s Cave. Cave tours are available, which allow visitors to view a small spring and underground stream. The park also offers 25 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. The park is also used for camping and fishing.

For more in the way of city conveniences, residents of the Lake Woodrail area head north into downtown Columbia. In addition to the University of Missouri campus, the downtown area also hosts Stephens College and Columbia College. Several medical centers can also be found here. Shopping and entertainment options in the downtown area include the Columbia Mall and Forum Shopping Center. Additional attractions near downtown Columbia include the Columbia Country Club and Cosmo Park, the latter of which offers a public golf course, skate park, and tons of sporting facilities and traditional park amenities.
