Meridian Apartments for Rent
With its strong military presence and terrific location, Meridian – Mississippi’s “Queen City” – has grown steadily since it incorporated in 1860, and is now the sixth largest city in the state. When the Civil War began, Meridian was a small village. But because of its location, the village became a hub of military installations. In 1864, the Battle of Meridian took place, and the village was decimated to such a degree that General Sherman boasted, “Meridian no longer exists.” But, despite the complete destruction, the railroad was quickly repaired, and the trains were running in less than a month.
Today, Meridian is home to nine historic districts, including the Downtown Historic District. Others include the West End Historic District, Mid-Town Historic District, Union Station Historic district, and East End Historic District. The districts contain a variety of architectural styles, especially Victorian, Queen Anne, Art Deco, and Colonial Revival.
With its history of military activity, it makes sense that the military is still a major presence in Meridian. The city is home to two military facilities, the Naval Air Station Meridian and Key Field. These two facilities are the area’s largest employers.
If you’re searching for a dynamic, Southern city with a fascinating history and plenty to do, then an apartment in Meridian is a great choice. As you begin to explore Meridian, you may notice quite a few horses in the area – brightly-colored horses. The city contains more than 50 carousel horse sculptures as part of an outdoor public arts project called Around Town Carousels Abound.
