Columbus is located near the Alabama border in central Mississippi. Three rivers meet here: the Tombigbee, the Buttahatchie, and the Luxapalila. Columbus is the eastern point in Mississippi’s Golden Triangle, with fellow Golden Triangle cities Starkville to the west and West Point to the northwest. Columbus is home to the Mississippi University for Women and Columbus Air Force Base.

The city of Columbus was called Possum Town before its incorporation in 1821. The name was given to the area by Native Americans who lived in the region, and it was kept by the settlers who arrived here in the late 1700s. Explore Hernando de Soto traveled to what is now Columbus in 1540, but it wasn’t until the 1780s that a trading post was established.

As you look at apartments for rent in Columbus, be sure to stop by the Welcome Center on Main Street – the historic house was the birthplace of Tennessee Williams. After that, travel to 4th Street South, between College Street and Main Street. This block is referred to as “Catfish Alley,” a nickname earned during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when African-Americans would bring in vegetables and fresh-caught catfish to sell. The name comes from the delicious smell of fried catfish sandwiches that filled the air on market days.

Once you’ve discovered the ideal Columbus apartment, be sure to visit other local historic sites and attractions and the Historic Downtown District. Main Street Columbus is filled with a variety of shops, restaurants, and historic buildings. It is also award-winning, named a Main Street USA.
