Many of Moorhead’s residents can trace their ancestry back to European origins, specifically citing Norwegian, German, and Swedish roots. European heritage has had quite an effective on the Moorhead community, as the city is home to a Norwegian Stave Church and the Hjemkomst Viking Ship. The ship is a replica built by Robert Asp in the 1970s. Asp was a Moorhead School guidance counselor, and shortly after his death, his children sailed the ship to Norway. Today, the ship is held at the Hjemkomst Center, which hosts several events throughout the year, including the Scandinavian Hjemkomst Festival.

Other Moorhead attractions include the Rourke Art Galley and the Rourke Art Museum, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as the Red River, where scenic pontoon rides are offered.
