“Duluth! The word fell upon my ear with peculiar and indescribable charm, like the gentle murmur of a low fountain stealing forth in the midst of roses …”
In 1871, Congressman J. Proctor Knott of Kentucky delivered a speech to the US House of Representatives entitled, “The Untold Delights of Duluth.” The whimsical, flowery speech was actually a protest concerning the western expansion of the railroads. The speech put the small village of Duluth on the map – a result the congressman never really intended. The nearby city of Proctor, Minnesota is named for him.
Today, Duluth is the largest US city on Lake Superior. With its steep hills and beautiful lake views, the city is a popular tourist destination. They come to Duluth for the amazing beaches, the spectacular parks, the waterfalls, and the hiking trails. Jay Cooke State Park features the starting point of the Superior Hiking Trail, part of the 280-mile North Country Trail. The Great Lakes Aquarium, a freshwater aquarium located on the shore of Lake Superior, is another major attraction.
After renting an apartment in Duluth, you’ll enjoy these destinations on a regular basis. Be sure to take a drive along the Skyline Parkway Scenic Byway and enjoy the amazing lakefront views. Attend the art galleries and museums, take a harbor cruise, and go golfing at Enger Park Golf Course.
At the time it was given, Congressman Knott’s speech was filled with ironic hyperbole; but in many ways it was also a foretelling of what that small village would eventually become – a stunningly beautiful port city.
