McConnell Air Force Base Area Apartment Housing(hide military information)
About four miles from downtown Wichita, McConnell Air Force Base began as an airport. Discussion began in 1924, with the ground-breaking taking place in 1929. It wasn’t until 1941 that a unit of the Kansas National Guard was assigned to the airport. The following year, the Wichita Army Airfield was established.
Today, McConnell Air Force Base is home to the 22d Air Refueling Wing of the Air Mobility Command. The Air Force Reserve Command’s 931st Air Refueling Group is also located on the base. Kansas Air National Guard still maintains a presence, as well, with the 184th Intelligence Wing.
Apartments in the McConnell Air Force Base area will most likely be found in southeast Wichita. Nearby neighborhoods include Meadowlark, Grandview Heights, East Mt. Vernon, and Planeview United. Derby and Haysville are within commuting distance, located just south of the base.
