Dover Air Force Base is a large base located just southeast of Dover, Delaware. Dover AFB was built in 1941 and is home to the 436th Airlift Wing and the 512th Airlift Wing. The aerial airport at the base is the largest in the country and is responsible for the majority of the cargo sent all over the world. Dover AFB is home to the Department of Defense’s largest military mortuary, where the remains of soldiers killed overseas are traditionally held until transferred to family. The Air Mobility Command Museum is in Hangar 1301, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum is open for guided tours.
Dover was founded in 1683 by William Penn. It is a beautiful city with a central square called The Green. The Dover Green Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, contains 79 beautiful buildings from the 18th century. The Eagle Tavern was built sometime before 1791, the Parke-Ridgely House was built in 1728, and the Old State House was built sometime around 1787. Other historic buildings in Dover include the Delaware Governor’s Mansion, which was built in 1790.
