Apartments for Rent in Whitman, MA(show city information)
The town of Whitman is located roughly 23 miles south of Boston, about 15 miles from the coast and 18 miles northwest of Plymouth. It has a history that dates back to Colonial times; it was first settled in 1670. But the “sweet” town of Whitman is famous for one thing in particular – the chocolate chip cookie.
In 1930, a dietitian named Ruth Graves Wakefield moved to Whitman with her husband and purchased a lodge they named the Toll House Inn. The toll house had been built in 1709 and passengers paid a toll, had a meal, and rested their horses at the house. And although the Toll House Inn is gone – a fire destroyed it in 1984 — the item Wakefield invented is not: the chocolate chip cookie. Wakefield used Nestle semi-sweet chocolate in the cookie, and the Nestle company made a deal with Whitman: they would provide her with a lifetime supply of chocolate if she would allow them to print her chocolate chip cookie recipe on the cover of their chocolate bars. Although Wakefield died in 1977, Nestle still prints the recipe on the back of Toll House Morsels.
Today, Whitman is a charming bedroom community for nearby Boston. It features a historic park designed by Frederick Law Olmstead in 1880, which offers a playground, an outdoor swimming pool, a historical bandstand, ball fields, and monuments. The town hosts several events at the park, including holiday events.
