Cambridge, MA Apartments for Rent

Boasting two world-class universities – Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology – makes Cambridge a city unlike any other. But it isn’t just its university vibe that makes Cambridge a terrific place to call home. From its old-old world charm to its modern buildings to its fantastic museums and year-round farmers markets, Cambridge apartments are terrific – even if you aren’t attending Harvard or MIT.

Located directly north of Boston, Cambridge was settled in 1630 by settlers looking for a new, safe location. With its location north of Boston Harbor, Cambridge was ideal as a strategic location – enemy ships could be easily seen sailing up the harbor. The settlers called their new town “the newe towne.” It became Newe Towne in 1632, then Cambridge in 1638. The site of the old settlement is today’s Harvard Square.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Harvard Square is the hub for Harvard students, located next to Harvard Yard. This brick-paved square is surrounded by historic architecture housing a variety of shops and restaurants, making it a terrific area to enjoy after selecting your apartment in Cambridge. Be sure to visit the Garage, a shopping mall (once used as a garage), the American Repertory Theater, and the Igor Fokin Memorial.

Cambridge is known as the “City of Squares.” The “squares” are actually neighborhoods, and each has its own personality. Kendall Square, for example, is a business-oriented neighborhood with several high-tech firms and office buildings. It is close to MIT, which lures a variety of high-tech companies to the area. The square also offers a farmer’s market, shops, and restaurants.

Where Kendall Square is high-tech and Harvard Square is historic, Inman Square is hip. This square features a variety of bars, music venues, trendy boutiques, and restaurants. It also features Victorian streetlights and one of Boston’s oldest improvisational theater troupes, ImprovBoston.

No matter where you rent in Cambridge, you’ll probably find yourself walking – Cambridge has the highest percentage of commuters who walk to work in the nation. With its historic squares, bike paths, and sidewalks, walking around Cambridge is fun and easy. If you prefer mass transit, Cambridge is part of Boston’s bus and train system, with the subway accessible from a variety of stations.
