One of the oldest neighborhoods in Lowell is commonly known as The Acre. This area has a rich history dating as far back as 1828. The Massachusetts neighborhood has always been diverse and was settled in waves over the years.
The Acre has plenty of recreational areas for families, including the North Common, Adams Park, Moody Street Playground, and Cross Street Park. Allen House, which was built in 1854, is also located in The Acre, on what was previously Roulfe Street and is now Solomont Way, a private road on the University of Massachusetts Lowell campus.
The Acre is at an intersection of Pawtucket Street, Fletcher Street, School Street, and Broadway Street, all of which share borders with other neighborhoods. The Hellenic American School and the Franco American School, both with rich historic stories, are located nearby.
The neighborhood is ideal for those who love walking, as it has plenty of well-developed sidewalks. In addition, residents who enjoy walking also have easy access to downtown Lowell and some of the other local neighborhoods. The public transportation provides an easy way to get to shopping; Lowell Museums, such as the Boott Mills Museum and Whistler House Museum of Art; and other types of entertainment.
This family-oriented neighborhood is also close to the Merrimack Repertory Theater, Showcase Cinemas, and several other entertainment spots less than three miles away.
Among the nearby grade schools serving The Acre are the Stoklosa Middle School and Bartlett Community Partnership. Residents have only a short commute to Lowell High School, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, and several private schools.
